About every ten minutes, even if the computer is idle, the spinning time wheel replaces the pointer and the insertion point jumps to a random location. Please note that this happens even if the touch pad is not touched. Is there a way to prevent this?

Try booting into Safe Mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support and see if the issue occurs there, then boot normally again and see if the issue persists.
Bitdefender is unnecessary and may even cause issues. I would uninstall it and see if that resolves the issue.
Thank you for responding. The problem did not occur in Safe Mode, but it did recur when I booted normally. I suppose that means I'm loading an app that's causing the problem, but the only app I see that might be guilty is Bitdefender. The rest are all standard.
