External Monitor Problems

Hey, so i have a couple of gripes with the automatic functions of connecting my MBA M1 to an external display.

  1. The taskbar doesn't switch from monitor-to-monitor very well. I used to be able to just hover over the area where the task bar should be with my mouse, and the taskbar would switch from where it was to where I wanted with little difficulty, now it's acting up.
  2. When I click on an app in the taskbar, it almost always open said app in the opposite display from the one I chose...I would like it so that if I open aan app on one display, it opens on that same display...instead it removes what I have prepared on the other one and pops up, it's so annoying and not at all user-friendly.

Am I being dumb? Is there a way around it? Thank-you.

Hey there, herbiedm!

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.

When you say that the taskbar isn't showing up automatically, are you referring to the menu bar at the top of your screen or the Dock which shows your apps, typically located on the bottom of your screen? If it's the menu bar, you may want to try disabling "Automatically hide..." in System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar to see if that helps you access this feature more easily.

With regard to your second question, we think that using multiple spaces on your Mac should help accomplish this. You can basically create an additional desktop, or space, where you can have apps automatically default to. Check out this article for specific instructions: Work in multiple spaces on Mac - Apple Support

Let us know if this does the trick!

Cheers.
