Blurry Images in MacBook Pro Camera

It's this kind of thing which will send me straight back to Microsoft - by Jove it's annoying.

The camera on my MacBook Pro, after years of perfect operation, now causes blurry, unusable images. It has come out of the blue. The difficulty emerges in FaceTime, Photo Booth or any other app which uses the camera.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

I'm very close to a new lap-top and right now it's looking very much like a PC.

An exasperated Bill . . .

what has changed in the context of "It has come out of the blue." (?) This may be a clue.

If it is a hardware issue, then nothing can be done here.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

To trouble shoot further you can:

—SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, font cache, etc.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS
