iPhone picture stretching?

I've gotten the distinct impression that my iPhone SE photos are coming out a little vertically stretched, in that they seem a little less wide than they should be. That is, a square comes out looking a bit rectangularish. Is there some adjustment for this effect? Given that the aspect ratios ought to be set by the camera chip, and pixels ought to be square, I find this a little hard to believe, but ...

Are you using the "Photo" option when taking pictures, or something else? More information about camera modes can be found in the following guide, just in case: Use camera modes on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch


If you're using the preferred mode, let us know a bit more information:


  • Does this happen regardless of the app you use (Camera app or a third-party app)?
  • Do you notice the same behavior with both the front and back camera?
  • Since menu options can vary, which software version shows in Settings > General > About?
