Printing to an AirPrint printer on another subnet

I have an office with a couple of airprint printers one one subnet, and iPhone users connected to a guest network on another subnet. The iPhone users can ping the printers, but can't print to them because they are on a separate subnet. Is there anything I can do so that my iPhone users can access these printers?

Hi,

Any information about the router(s)? Separate routers? Model(s)? AirPrint would require, as you also mentioned, the iPhones to be on the same subnet as the printers. It may or may not be possible to (somehow) bridge the subnets, but that would probably defeat the purpose of a guest network...

BTW, Xerox has a white paper Enabling Apple® AirPrint®with Your Xerox®AltaLink®Multifunction Printer which also provides general technical information about how AirPrint works, including details about Bonjour/mDNS.

I have a CenturyLink DSL Router that currently has my printers hardwire connected to it. Behind the DSL Router, I have an Asus Router that is connect to another couple of Asus routers running as AiMesh nodes. I want the printers to be accessible by both the computers on my main LAN, as well as by iPhones / iPads that are connected to the guest network on the Asus Routers.

With my current setup, the computers on my main LAN can print just fine. The iPhones connected to my guest network can ping the printers, but they can't find them as AirPrint devices, as they are on a different subnet from the printers.

Note: Devices connected to the Asus guest network only have access to the internet. Not only are they isolated from the main LAN, they are also isolated from other devices on the guest network.

Thank you for the update.

Without knowing the exact router models involved, and details about the setup, it is difficult to comment. However, generally speaking, any changed setting allowing extended access for guests (including printing) would mean reduced security for the main network. Would it not be easier to just place one separate printer on the guest network?
