do i keep my backup device plugged in all the time

When using time machine do I keep my backup device plugged in all the time so it will automatically backup or can I just plug it in and manually backup.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

You don't need to leave the external drive plugged in all of the time. I plug mine in once a week (but you may want to do it more frequently) -- I don't have a lot of data that changes and I also have online backup via Carbonite.

After the initial one-time setup, Time Machine will sense the drive when you plug it in and will automatically back it up.
