iPhone 13 mini overheating

Our iPhone 13 mini (purchased new at Apple Store in April) becomes too hot to hold after a 20 minute phone call. Current iOS, no other apps running, background app refresh off, and all other steps taken including hardware reset/wipe/re-install. Apple Store ran diagnostics and found no issues. As long as it doesn’t shut off/reset, they said that there is nothing to do except turn it off for 2 hours and restart. That’s not acceptable. We’re at our wits end. I could see if we were gaming, playing videos for extended time, but a simple phone call in a cool house should not cause this. Any ideas on how to get this defective phone replaced?

Thanks in advance, Bonnie

Do you have a case on the phone that may preventing the normal expected heating due to the 2nd law of thermodynamics to escape? The iPhone has over-temperature protection; if it gets too hot it will shut down and display a message saying it needs to cool off. If you don’t see this message it hasn’t overheated. The screen would normally be off if you are hold the phone to your ear; is this happening? The screen is the single greatest cause of heat generation after cellular data; it should turn off to prevent your face from triggering any buttons, as well as to keep the phone cooler.

How good is your cellular signal when you are in a phone call? A weak signal will require the iPhone to work harder to keep a signal, therefore causing the processor to get warm.

If you do not feel this is acceptable, no one here could change that. We are users here, just like you are and cannot change what Apple recommends for you to do. You will have to deal with them to try and change their recommendations.
