"Check for 'Activation Lock' before you buy a device from someone else.."

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

//support.apple.com/kb/HT201365

"Don't take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it's protected by Activation Lock."

"Before you buy an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, from someone other than

Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller, make sure that the device is erased

and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account."

"Learn more about what to do.." (above article covers this in greater detail) :

before you sell or give away your device or before you send it in for service.

"Make sure that you turn off Find My on your device before you give

it away or send it in for repair. Otherwise, your device is locked and

anyone that you give the device to, can't use it normally and Apple

technicians can't perform service repairs. Just sign out of iCloud and

then erase all content and settings. This completely erases your device,

removes it from your Apple ID, and turns off Find My."

Given the nature of these factoids, it'd be a sincere bet: That iPhone has

an Activation Lock, due to a previous ownership ~ not been relinquished.

(Almost all things about Asurion are in this search result.)

If you could contact the original registered iPhone owner ~ and have them

follow through with the steps (or give you money back) as this article says:

• What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

//support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351

Then maybe ~ the previous owner's hold over this device, may be removed.

And as an unlocked device, it could then may be OK to start over as Owner.

Get help if your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen.

Since Asurion claims to have insurance, you need a New phone.

PS: Short-term replacement for stolen or lost phone, runs about $200+

Asurion's warranty varies. Their web pages seem a bit tricky, too.

They may try to get you a workable phone. However, locally your

'cellular carrier' also resells good condition guaranteed phones;

& can provide limited plans for pre-paid, prices @ service levels.

A fair 'used phone' may be found at Best Buy, or one of your local

cellular carriers; Asurion (one of their business names) based in

US state of Tennessee. ~ I'd not go that far, for used phone..

Even 'craigslist' can show good variety of products; & may vary.

Advice suggests you can try to get your money back; or to get

them to reset the phone you have; or get another ~ and so on.

The Activity Lock? Shows a poor lack of attention to Details.

Good luck & happy trails!🚀|🐝
