MacBook Air M1 first time setup

I’m having a problem with first time setup, I get to logging on to my Wi-Fi network and then it asks me to allow “Schoolmint” to have control of the device. If I allow it then shows Google sign in, after which I can not take any further steps to complete set up.

Hi Tush58,

If you're seeing a Remote Management screen as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi, your M1 MacBook Air is owned by a school or business. Do NOT proceed with setup.

In this case, contact Schoolmint or the company/insitution that owns (or used to own) the Mac. If they sold or gave away the Mac, they will need to complete these steps on their side. Be sure to provide them with your Mac's serial number.

  1. In a web browser, log in to Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.
  2. In the left sidebar, select Devices.
  3. Select your device and click Release. Confirm the warning.

Once the company or institution releases your Mac, you will need to erase it and reinstall macOS. At this point, the Mac will be wholy yours; the company or institution cannot re-enroll your Mac unless they have physical possession of it AND it shows the Setup Assistant.

My guess is this is not a brand new Mac but a used one that had a user "schoolmint".

If you bought it thinking it was new and unused, take it back as it's not new and was not properly setup for resale..

Possibly over charged for a new Mac?

Many thanks for your reply, I’ve contacted SchoolMint via email with the device serial number as calling them from the UK they do not take international calls. I’ve now been waiting a couple of days for a reply as yet not even acknowledgement that they are in receipt.

it looks like, from the lack of SchooMint reply, my fall back position is to have the device sent this back to the retailer.

thank you all for your comments and solutions.
