Using Mid 2010 24 inch IMAC as a monitorto late 2012 27 inch

I have connected the two IMACS via a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 2 cable directly, but can not get the 2010 to serve as a monitor despite using Command F2 and FN-Command F2

Am I out of luck?

Jack, thank you. It is a 21.5 mid 2010 with 10.13.6 I had mistyped based on another IMAC I had owned.

OK, thanks for confirming!

Unfortunately, the iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) isn't compatible for Target Display Mode, only the 27-inch model. However, there is a third-party solution called Luna Display that might work for you. I recommend checking it out.

I hope this helps!

24-inch and 27-inch iMac models introduced in 2009 and 2010

To use any of these iMac models as an external display:

  • The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
  • The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort  cable.

In addition, I wanted to let you know that for your configuration, you should order the Mini DisplayPort version of Luna:

Both Mac computers must be running OS X El Capitan or later.

Also, on your older Macs, the default, wireless Luna connection may be slow. If you experience less than ideal performance with Luna, you may want to use a wired connection. Should this happen, refer to: How do I use a USB, Ethernet, or Thunderbolt connection? - Luna Display Astropad Support.

So you believe a minidisplay port to minidisplay port will allow The 2010 24" 10.13.6 to act as a monitor to a 2012 27" 10.15.7, both IMACS? The Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 2 didn't work even though the specifications on each unit seem to support it. I have found conflicting reports that the 2012 source IMAC might have to be 10.13 "High Sierra or Lower"
