Muting and unmuting text messages.

I have read here that a muted text alert symbol is identified as a bell with a diagonal line through it. This makes sense; except that when my bell is slashed with a line, I receive text alerts; and when I have no line through the bell; my text alerts then get muted.

This has always seemed backwards to me; and even the answers here contradict what my bell symbols actually mean. I’m confused.

If the bell has a slash through it, it means that, if you tap on it, it will mute the conversation. If it does not have a slash through it, tapping on it will unmute it. Look at it this way, the button is telling you the state that will be activated by tapping. It is not an indicator of the current state.

Once you tap on the bell to mute the conversation, there will be a small indicator icon on the very right of the conversation that shows a bell with a slash through it. That lets you know the conversation has been muted.
