default sorting method for Mail

Is there a way to set a DEFAULT SORTING METHOD for e-mail in the Mail program? It seems to change each time. When I create a new folder, I want the most recent e-mails first, but they appear at the bottom. I'm tired of having to change the order each and every time.

Sort messages in a folder How do I alphabetize messages in a folder? When I add a mailbox in the On My Mac section of Mail on my iMac, they do not automatically slot in to the list alphabetically nor will it allow me to drag them to the right spot.
