You can set the default file type to "Most Compatible" and your images will be saved not as heic files.
For example, you can do this:
Although HEIC saves quality photos in smaller sizes as compared to JPG, it can be annoying to convert HEIC images
to JPG. Moreover, Apple does not give an option to change the default setting in the camera app. You will have to go to Settings to switch formats. Here's how.
But, it should be noted that the photos that you've already clicked will remain in the HEIC format, and only the
new images that you click will be saved as JPG.

Because heic is not a standard ubiquitous image format supported by third party web browsers/apps.
I get that, but can Apple really lock us up that thoroughly? After decades of posting photos on Facebook, I have not been posting pics since they adopted heic. I've been waiting for them to fix the obvious problem. Do I just need throw out all my photos? Even if I bought a non-Apple computer, it seems that heic would be unreadable by that too. I converted one to jpg and it loaded enough to allow me to list something, but the image was garbage.
Will 'most compatible' be a normal jpg that the world recognizes? Will the video formats be useable and will quality be lost? So much for investing money in the 'best' iphone. I guess all my thousands of photos and videos for at least the past year are toast. I can't believe that there has not been an uproar of protest or did I just miss that? BTW, thanks for your help.
By garbage, I mean it was not an image at all. It just had had an X box in one corner to delete it.
