Merging many old libraries into a new photos library

OVERVIEW

I'm trying to clean up a disaster I've made for my self over about 10 years. I've got over a dozen libraries (some very large w many videos from my work... mainly iphoto but also photos, apperture, and just folders). I never merged them bc I preferred iphoto but my old laptop died and now it's awful. I've spent hours with creative specialists on the phone just getting organized enough to start and last night I think we made a good plan.

FYI - I have 1T on my apple AIR and am trying to get everything onto an 8T external.

We think the best plan is as follows:

  • create default PHOTOS library on External (called THE GREAT MERGER)
  • rename the MASTER Folder from each library to both keep up with my progress and know what's what when I do the next step
  • Copy each MASTER folder to a temp folder I'm calling the "Drivethrough" on the same external
  • Drag each new folder into the THE GREAT MERGER

QUESTIONS

  • Does anyone see a better way?
  • I know I'll lose my photo edits, but will I lose subfolder "albums" or timestamps?
  • Are MASTERS still the way to go vs. ORIGINALS bc of the messy folder set up (see linked post)

NOTE: I am VERY VERY "un techie." Please try to write your answer in simple language? :)

The latest version of Photos can import another library into the open library. It will import the metadata also. However, it does not import albums or projects.

If you enable iCloud Library you can fully merge libraries into one library including all albums and metadata. I don't know if projects are imported. This method will require temporary purchasing enough iCloud space to hold all of the photos in one library and will take much more time to complete, maybe weeks.

The paid version of PowerPhotos can merge two libraries, including metadata, albums and projects (the projects will be imported as albums only as project themes and makeup can change between Photos versions). PowerPhotos is also an excellent photo browser for Photos libraries (without having to open the library in Photos) and can search for and identify duplicate phoitos in a library. It's a powerful tool to compliment Photos.
