What to do if phone is violently stolen?

Police want the full IMEI number, but icloud only will show me an obscured version. How do I get all the hardware info to fill out this report? Should I wipe the phone immediately or should I not in the hopes it will ping cell towers revealing location? I'm very surprised there is no mention of best practices in these situations.

if one backup to itunes / finder the imei is listed under the backup
