Is there a way to set the default audio input and output device?

I'm just trying to use the "handoff" feature, taking incoming calls through my Macbook & Facetime. I used to be able to do this no problem, but somewhere along the way during the switch to Big Sur or Monterey, I gave up on this very useful feature because it always seems to choose the input source that doesn't work. I got tired of scrambling to pick the right input device before the caller hung up. I use my Macbook with the lid closed, so the internal microphone is unavailable, yet it's often the device chosen as the input source (but not always). I've actually just purchased a WIRED USB headset to bypass the Bluetooth musical chairs involved with trying to use my Airpods.

Hello adamfromtempe,

The microphone and output settings for FaceTime can be found in FaceTime's Video menu.

In there it will default to 'Use System Setting', but you may specify a particular one there.

I'm not having trouble finding the settings in Facetime; I am struggling with how to set a DEFAULT value (my USB headset) for the input & output source for that application only. By default I mean that the next time I make or receive a call, the same options are selected until I change them. It sounds like there is unfortunately no way to do this, and I will not be able to rely on my Macbook to answer calls like I used to.
