Akai MPK249 not working with brand new M1 macbook air

I recently upgraded my computer to the M1 macbook air figuring I would just use a usb hub to connect my external hard drive and keyboard to my computer. I got a relatively low budget one. It didn't work, but I think that is because the capacity of the hub is maxed by my hard drive. Then, I got a usb a to usb c dongle for the keyboard, but that didn't work. Did some looking and found a reddit forum where someone said to just get a usb b to usb c cable to go directly from the keyboard to the computer. My cable doesn't work, and I'm wondering what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
