how to share files on a local network

My wife and I are working on a project. She has a Macbook Pro and I have an iMac. Both running OS Mojave. I set up file sharing for the volume to share between us. It shows up on her computer all right.

I added her as a user with read and write privileges, however if she tries to open a file and make any changes to it she gets a message that the file is locked. My understanding is that this file sharing function is such that we can both edit the shared files. Why is this happening? Any ideas?

I'm not sure why your situation is happening but have you considered sharing the file using iCloud? It may or may not work for you. The file will be kept synchronized across both computers. Maybe check it out.

I assumed that would be expensive. The volume I am sharing is 500 GB. But I will check into that option. You are suggesint it will work better, right?

I did not realize you were talking about 500GB.

It would be about $10 a month. Would be worth it if it works. Still a puzzle why file sharing does not. Makes me suspicious that iCloud may not either.
