Are you using AirPlay, or are you using Home Sharing, or did you intend to stream directly on the Apple TV box?
Does the unit not turn on, or is this for a specific app or stream?
If your Apple TV doesn't turn on - Apple Support
Is the status light glowing continuously? Then the unit would have started up correctly, and passed the self-test.
