Activity app on Apple Watch without iPhone

Does the Activity app on the Apple Watch track activity if you forget to take your phone?

Yes,then when the watch is within bluetooth range of the phone your activity is uploaded to the fitness app/health app on the phone.I have been doing it this way for 5 years now,I never take my phone with me.
