I have a friend who accidentally deleted a number of text messages which had photos attached. According to her, she did backups of her phone, but text messages were not included in the backups.
Are these photos gone for good or would they be saved somewhere else?

We'd love to assist you with your deleted messages. If they did not save the photos and the text message thread has been deleted, then they are gone unless the message thread can be recovered.
If you are using the Messages in iCloud feature, then once the messages are deleted you will no longer be able to retrieve them. You can check to see if the feature is enabled in Settings > Tap your name > iCloud > Messages. You can find more info on the feature here: Use Messages in iCloud - Apple Support
If you are not using Messages in iCloud, but you regularly backup your device, then you can restore the device from a backup that was done when the messages were on the phone by completing the steps listed here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. Please keep in mind that restoring from the backup will require the device to be erased and it will only restore the content back on the device that was on it when the backup was created.
