Wrong version of Chrome installing on M1 MacBook Pro

I have an M1 MacBook Pro, and Chrome has been running crazy slow. After some investigation, I discovered that it is running the intel version.

I can see this via the activity monitor, or "About Chrome" which shows I am using: Version 103.0.5060.114 (Official Build) (x86_64 translated)

I've uninstalled it completely, and reinstalled it multiple times (including using CleanMyMac), and it always installs the intel version.

I know you used to be able to choose the correct version for your architecture manually. Now you don't have that option. Google chooses for you, and in my case, always chooses wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Uninstall CMM by following the developer's instructions. CMM is notorious on these forums for causing all sorts of problems with macOS. Anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software are not needed on a Mac and usually cause more problems than they solve plus they impact system performance.

Vivaldi is another Chromium based browser, but with lots of added features providing the user to really customize the behavior of the browser if they like.

Edit: It has the ARM native version. I think it just automatically converted my Intel version into the M1 version with one of the regular browser updates. At least I don't recall having to manually intervene.

This might helps you --> https://knowtechie.com/if-you-just-got-a-new-m1-mac-make-sure-youre-using-the-right-version-of-google-chrome/

That said, I dumped Chrome when I got my new M1 Pro MacBook Pro and installed Brave, which is a Chrome type browser, without the ads or tracking. It's actually terrific. Check this out --> https://www.ithinkdiff.com/brave-native-apple-silicon-m1-macs/

@lobsterghost1

They posted a caveat to that article in February saying google has done away with the separate download for M1 Macs, except they've helpfully buried the update halfway down the page under point 4:

The whole article is defunct now that Chrome has a universal download, but despite the confusion it now causes, I expect knowtechie don't want to delete it because SEO. 🙄

I believe the OP already knows this?

@jonofspades – Did you finally get your Chrome problem sorted?!
