What does a AirPort Extreme do exactly?
My boyfriend just was given a AirPort Extreme from a family member and we are not sure exactly what it does?

this describe what a router is, tl;dr it can make you a local arear wireless network, which in terms can be connected to the internet by a cable or adsl or fiber model connected to it.
The AirPort Extreme is the Apple version of a wireless Internet router. One important thing to note is that Apple decided to exit the networking hardware business back in 2018. As such, there will be little chance that you will be seeing much from Apple related to updates or support for these devices.
