Have accumulated a lot over time and doing them one at a time seems very painful. Are there any almost safe options to purge the ones you really don't want all at once?

In the current supported iOS version (iOS 15.X), there is no way to remove duplicate contacts easily besides going one-by-one and removing them. However iOS 16, coming later this year, implements a feature to remove duplicate contacts and photos. If you cannot wait you'll need to delete them one-by-one. iOS 16 Preview - Apple
