Why can't I screen record all of a sudden?

So all of a sudden (quite literally, between yesterday and today) my screen record function doesn't work anymore. I have an Iphone 13 Pro Max with IOS 15.5. When I try to screen record anything - text messages, home screen, youtube, settings, etc - all I get is a black, silent video. I even tried a popular and useful app 'RecordIt' that I used to use - and that results in the same "screen" but at least I hear the sound of whatever is recorded.

Any ideas? I've been using screen record for years without issue
