AirPods not playing computer sound when sharing video in Powerpoint

When presenting using Powerpoint (v16.63 for the Mac) I often embed video - either directly in the deck or via the online video option - Vimeo or YouTube. These presentations are done through Microsoft Teams (v1.5 for Mac).

Since getting AirPods (2nd Generation), whilst they work fine 99% of the time during a presentation, when I play an embedded/online video through Teams' screen sharing option (with 'Share Computer Sound' turned on) the sound will revert to playing directly through my MacBook external speakers and not my AirPods. This has a direct effect on the quality of the presentation as people can't hear the audio at all.

I can't find any reference to this problem anywhere and if I use other wired headphones it's not an issue, just AirPods. I can't figure out if it's a Powerpoint, Teams, AirPod or Bluetooth issue. Or even related to the video sharing platform itself somehow.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Welcome TeaMan47,

It sounds like you have an issue with your AirPods when using PowerPoint and Teams on your MacBook Pro. We'll do our best to help out with this.

What version of macOS are you using? If needed, make sure the Mac is backup and up to date: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If the issue persists, we'd reset the AirPods using these steps: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support (We'd take this step because other headphones seem to be working fine.)

How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro
You might need to reset your AirPods if they won't charge, or to fix a different issue.

1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Open the lid of your charging case.
4. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods. (If you don't see your AirPods in Settings > Bluetooth, just go to the next step.)
5. Tap Forget This Device, and tap again to confirm.
6. With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber, then white.*
AirPods charging cases
7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Follow the steps on your device's screen.

AirPods can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use AirPods (3rd generation) or AirPods Pro that someone else has used, they first need to remove the AirPods from their Apple ID.

* When you reset your AirPods, the settings for your AirPods also reset. You can change your settings again.

After resetting your AirPods test out the issue. If it continues, what macOS version are you using? Does this only occur with the Microsoft Teams and PowerPoint apps?

Wishing you well, take care.
