For your protection you will need to retrieve it before continuing to use the App Store

I was trying to download the old OS X El Capitan (10.11) from the App Store but on hitting 'Get' I was asked for the Apple ID user name and password. I entered the correct details (I can log into all other AppleID associated areas (such as http://appleid.apple.com) without issue proving that these details are absolutely correct). I also ensured caps lock wasn't on.

Instead of starting the download, AppStore stated "your password was entered incorrectly more than once. For your protection you will need to retrieve it before continuing to use the App Store"

How do I "retrieve" the password when I already have the correct password and am using it?

Eventually I got around the problem by downloading the disk image version of the installer (which bypasses the AppStore.

But I'd still like to know how to fix this problem in case it occurs in the future.

Thoughts?

The_Knowledge_Seeker,

Thanks for confirming this for us. If that's the case, then in the future, be sure to enter a verification code after your password since using an older version of macOS with two factor authentication.

We hope this helps out with avoiding this scenario in the future.

Thanks for that.

To be honest, I now can't be sure whether the verification code was sent when trying to log into AppStore. If not, then I wouldn't have been able to enter it at the end of the password!

But my memory may be failing me. I'll note your response in case I come across this issue again in the future.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Are you using two-factor authentication with your Apple ID

Yes

in combination with also using a macOS version older than OS X El Capitan?

Only to the extent that I was trying to install 10.11 onto a Mac running 10.10.

If so, be sure to try entering in the verification in the same box as the password, with no spaces between the end of the password and the start of the verification code.

In any event, no verification code was received or asked for, when trying to log into the AppStore. That said, the two factor authentication worked everywhere else (such as http://appleid.apple.com, iCloud.com, etc.)

Did you follow the steps to retrieve the password?

There were no steps given to do this an , in any event, I was definitely using the correct Apple ID and password (proved because I could log in to that account anywhere else that the Apple ID and password is required).

If so, you can check to make sure it's the one you're expecting.

Definitely the correct AppleID and password - it's the only one on the computer.

If you are not getting the error elsewhere, did you check to ensure there was not another Apple ID used with this computer?

Again, Definitely the correct AppleID and password - it's the only one on the computer.

This issue is that it's asking me to 'retrieve' the password when I already know and was using the correct password; and this only affects the AppStore.

Perhaps this is a bug in the AppStore software displaying the incorrect error messages?
