Hi all! Such a question: can I restore an iPhone 8 (with ios 15) from an iphone 5s backup (with ios 12)

Yes, it is possible to restore an iPhone with a newer iOS from the backup of an older iOS. That will restore the content. Restoring a backup does not affect the iOS on either devices. Just remember that anything you have on the iPhone 8 will be deleted and replaced with the data from the iPhone 5s backup.

I thought that you would be able to restore your phone from a backup made in iOS 12.. but I haven't tried it any time recently.

The iPhone 8 iOS would not be downgraded, but it would pull in the all the data and settings that it can to your current iOS version.

What you could do, is back up your current iPhone 8 using your computer, archive the backup to ensure it doesn't get lost/overwritten..

Then attempt to restore the iPhone 8 with the iOS 12 backup.

That is the only way you'd be able to extract data from a backup.

Note that if you were using iCloud photos or messages in iCloud at the time the iPhone 5s backup was created.. that data will not be in your backup.
