Which generation pencil is compatible with the 9th generation iPad?

I have a brand new 9th generation iPad and 2nd generation pencil, but the iPad isn’t recognizing the pencil when I connect it to the magnetic strip. Is the generation pencil compatible with the model iPad I have? The previous forum I read regarding pencil and iPad compatibility had no mentions of the 9th generation iPad. Does the pencil work with this model at all?
