How to change templates in Pages for iPad

So I have a highly modified template active. I want to use the same template on a new document. So I export the Page Template, no problem there.

But when I open an existing document how can I apply that new template? I’ve tried every Apple suggested procedure and none of them seem to work. So if you know how to open an existing document and apply a different template, I would be very grateful for some help.
