to airplay the screen of an iphone, ipad or mac to the tv using an appletv box read Use AirPlay to stream audio and video on Apple TV - Apple Support

to just view the appletv's interface on the tv to choose the hdmi port it's connected to as active input source, using the tv's remote would be sufficient.
