how to retrieve icloud password when phone is damaged beyond repair and password needed to find and delete phone

I'm under the impression that my apple id password and icloud id and password are two different entities. I tried it with no success
I lost my icloud password and now phone is damaged beyond repair. Now I can't get in to find phone to delete it and get a new one. Any suggestions?
