Sometimes my wife’s iPhone 12 Pro has a magnified Home Screen and won’t allow her to open the phone. To get it to return to normal we have to hard reset it. Does anyone have an idea of what the problem might be?

Sounds like she's activating Zoom.
Try tapping the screen with three fingers twice to turn it on/off. You can tap twice and drag to change the Zoom level.
You can go to Settings->Accessibility->Zoom and turn it off so it cannot be turned on again by the 3 finger double tap.
