If you're using Apple Mail app, and if you are connected to a reliable and fast wifi network with internet access, try to delete that gmail account, restart your iPhone, then re-add that gmail account and wait for it to repopulate.
On the contrary, if you're using Google Gmail app, contact Google support team and explain your problem.
