You might want to consider changing your password and making sure it is a strong one. You can also add 2 Factor Authentication to your account for more security. If the attempts continue, you might want to consider a name change.

An Apple ID breach can be catastrophic, yes. Absent an external data archive, particularly.

I’ll assume you're using the same Apple ID throughout, and have not somehow gotten a second Apple ID involved.

That the damage was apparently limited to deleting contacts was, well, fortuitous, in a manner of consideration.
