iPhone 12 phone audio vs. speakerphone

My husband has an iPhone 12. When I talk to him on it his voice frequently stretches into an autotuned sound for a couple seconds, then the sound drops out entirely for several seconds. When I can hear him again he sounds normal, but then the autotune/drop cycles over and over. When he puts the phone on speaker and talks to me this stops. Anyone know what this can be?
