I have an imac (wired) and a macbook pro ( wireless). When the imac is on the macbook is unable to conect to the internet, i can access the internet via the mackbook as long as the imac is off. any ideas why this is.

Per chance are you trying to use both of these Macs near each other? Do you use any wireless peripherals with the iMac? If so, create a new "Network Location" on your iMac that only includes the Ethernet connection. That way your iMac will not attempt to use Wi-Fi at all.
