Ken Burns Effect In FCE

I am new to FCE but very familiar with iMovie '09. In iMovie I used the Ken Burns effect quite a bit to simulate horizontal panning of the camera but I cannot find reference to the effect in the FCE user manual nor in books on FCE.

Is it possible to do in FCE? If so how?

If not can I apply it in iMovie then somehow get the movie into FCE for further editing in a way that preserves the effect?

Thank you for the prompt reply. I have had a read of both pages. The Wolsky method seems to discuss ken burns effects applied to still images where as I am looking to add it to video clips - just checking that it works for video as well as stills. The PieroF filter looks interesting but is designed for random effects and appears to need manual intervention in order to have controlled panning from one exact place to another.

In iMovie I cut clips into 10 second to 30 second segments each of which gets individual cropping and ken burns effects. It can take a couple of hours just to do 8 or so minutes of video. These techniques in FCE could easily take a lot longer. Is there a way of doing that work in iMovie and then exporting in a way that allows me to import it into FCE with the Ken Burns effects intact?

Yes, you can do Ken Burns effects with video clips in FCE. It's not that difficult do to by setting Motion keyframes in the Canvas (Image + Wireframe mode) as Tom explained for still images. You just need to practice a bit. I can't imagine it taking more than a couple minutes to do basic scaling & motion, including Ken Burns panning, on a clip.

A simple process ...
Set the Canvas for Image + Wireframe
Move the Playhead to the point in the clip where you want the Ken Burns effect to begin
In the Canvas, drag the clip to the location +in the Canvas frame+ where you visually want it to start
Set a Keyframe (in the lower right corner of the Canvas window, third button from the right)
Then move the Playhead to the point in the clip where you want the Ken Burns effect to end
Again in the Canvas, drag the clip to the location +in the Canvas frame+ where you visually want it to end
Set another Keyframe
You will see the motion track in the Canvas

Motion effect (aka Ken Burns effect) is now done ...
Play the timeline to see the actual results of the motion path that you created

Martin that plugin looks perfect for me and I appreciate the suggestion. I will download it immediately.

It does lead to this question though:
Are there a lot of plugins for FCE (paid as well as free) and is there a web page that lists and or reviews them?

I also get the impression that there is an active community of FCE and other video creators helping each other out. Are there any other forums or review sites that I might benefit from as an interested creative new user looking to expand my skills and capabilities?

FYI - you do have to install FXFactory first, before you can load & use the plugin. FxFactory is also free.

There are loads of plugins for Final Cut Express, some free, some have a price. There's no one place you can find them all. If you search on the web (or even in this forum) you will find various lists & recommendations. (Hmmm ... maybe I should put such a list together ...)

I particularly like Patrick Sheffield's Technicolor plugins (free) and Graeme Nattress' Film Effects and Big Box of Tricks

There are many film and video forums and a number of FCE forums (eg dvcreators, 2-pop, videomaker, etc.) - but imho the one you are in right now is by far the best of the lot. Also, if you search you will find a number of FCPro forums ... and there is a good one right in Sydney - the SydneyFCP ! Take a look!

Martin,
I had already found many good resources including Apple's own FCE Resources page yet I had still not found your three excellent suggestions here so perhaps there is a need for a more comprehensive listing to be made. I would certainly have appreciated it tonight. As it is I now have some potential plugin suites which I have put into my budget wishlist and while I have been investigating I have been learning lots about the program generally. I am discovering lots of questions and generally finding answers although I have yet to discover whether or not FCE works easily with the iPhone or not (important to me as I use both Panasonic GH1 and iPhone 3GS - and soon the iPhone 4)

Martin,
In my research I found advice on how to use iMovie to do stabilization for FCE:

http://theappleblog.com/2010/05/03/how-to-final-cut-express-stabilization-using- imovie/

In another place I discovered that it is audio and transition effect which do not transfer to FCE from iMovie so it seems to me that it should be possible to do Ken Burns effects in iMovie and then import that into FCE with Ken Burns effects intact. Do you have any reason to think that this would not work?

umm ... with all due respect, we pointed you to 4 good ways to do Ken Burns effects in FCE. They're all pretty straightforward. Honestly don't know what the issue is, unless it's that there's not a +built-in filter+ called 'Ken Burns'. The capability is there. For stabilization, there are 3d party filters for FCE and there is also FCPro with its SmoothCam feature. Plus, isn't it great that users contribute ways they have discovered to do things.

If you are looking to apply the Ken Burns effect on +lots of clips at once+, you can do it using "Paste Attributes..."

- First use the motion tab in one clip to make a Ken Burns effect, as described above.
- Then select the clip and select "Copy" from the menu.
- Select all the other clips that you want the motion to be applied to.
- Select "Paste Attributes...". A dialog box will appear asking which attributes you want to apply. Select "Motion" (Any any others you want as well.)

Then go into the individual clips' motion panel and adjust the exact positions as needed. It ends up being faster and more flexible then iMovie when you do it this way.
