Will an older iPod that supports bluetooth connect to AirPods?

1 have an older iPod Touch (3rd gen on iOS 5.5) and I was wondering if it would connect to my AirPod (2nd gen). I searched it up and all I saw were articles saying that the device must be past iOS 10 in order to connect. However, without following any sort of suggestion too, I tried to hold and press on the back button of the AirPod case (with AirPods inside) while having the bluetooth screen open on the iPod. The AirPods showed up and I was able to successfully connect and listen using them, however I am still being told that it is simply not possible. Does anyone know what the specific regulations are or anything?
