how do I put my ipad in recovery mode?

It depends on the model.


For an iPad without a Home button, press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button, press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button, then press and hold the top button as shown below.



For an iPad with a Home button, simply press and hold both the Home and the top (or side) buttons at the same time. 




Either way, your iPad should look like this after successfully being put into Recovery Mode-
