macbook pro 2017 replacement power supply

Good Morning:

Last night my wife's MacBook Pro 2017 power supply failed. According to the electronic tag on it it's an 87 W power supply. Can I use this power supply I found on Amazon? without damaging her MacBook:

Much gratitude in advance!

USB-C power adapeters are supposed to be more or less interchangeable. Theoretically any USB-C power adapter will work, even with less power. I'm not sure about the quality though of some generic power supply. I would personally insist on a major manufacturer like Lite-On or Flextronics. They're often the OEM's supplier although not all are identified on the power adapter. Or something like Anker or Belkin.

I'm currently using an Apple 30W USB-C power adapter (packaged with a now dead MacBook Air) plus an AmazonBasics USB-C charge cable on a Lenovo where the original 45W power adapter (with captive cable) failed. I think the connector died. But that's the beauty of USB-C. It works fine - most of the time.

The biggest concern would be safety. These can often get really hot and I've heard of the occasional time when a generic power adapter of poor quality caught on fire.

@y_p_w is absolutely correct. I would not trust that charger with your expensive laptop. Most legitimate quality chargers will cost at least twice that amount. Such a low price is a warning sign to me. There are so many fakes and unsafe chargers being sold online which are both a safety risk to both you and your laptop. Plus Amazon is known to host a lot of fake & cheap (both in quality & price) items. Many of those cheap chargers are lacking proper safety circuitry. Plus the Apple USB-C laptops can be easily damaged by cheap chargers which will result in a very expensive Logic Board replacement. Do you really want to risk your laptop?

Thank you very much for your reply. Point well taken. I did look at the certifications for the power supply from Amazon. They were close except it did not contain the UL listing. So I went and found an actual Apple power supply and bought it. It was a little more expensive but after reading your comment and thinking about it it only made sense. Besides I can return the one I bought back to Amazon at no charge. (Charge)!!!! Get it!

Much gratitude for your response! Have a great week!
