I have not updated from an iPhone 8+ because I don't want to have to pick up my phone to unlock it with Face ID. Today I thought that maybe the IR reader in the newer phones might be able to map a fingerprint instead of a face. Has anyone done this? I'd like to have the better cameras available today, but I don't like Face ID at all.

Well, it’s not an either/or thing. Touch ID was retired in favor of Face ID. iPhones that support Face ID do not support Touch ID and vice-versa. There is no model iPhone that supports both. And has been pointed out iPhones with Face ID cannot be configured to recognize a fingerprint instead of a face. So the answer to your original question is a solid, unequivocal NO. So if you don't like Face ID you won’t be buying a new iPhone any time soon. Of course you always have choices in what products you buy and whom you buy them from. I hope this finally clears things up for you.

You can either use Touch ID (fingerprint) OR Face ID with the iPhone. Using your fingerprint as your face will not work AFAIK.
No, you can't use TouchID on an iPhone that uses FaceID.
You can always use a passcode instead of FaceID.
Thanks. I think you’re saying that I can use an iPhone SE and use my fingerprint or use Face ID with the phones with the best cameras, but there isn’t what I want.
Thanks for the reply. I don’t want to have to pick the phone up to unlock it or to have to take my eyes off what I’m already doing, so a passcode doesn’t help me.
If a phone has Touch ID, it doesn’t have Face ID.
