french accents on macbook pro

I used to be able to add a Frencc accent by holding down letters like e or o or i etc which would give me a menu of accents to add. This feature has stopped working on my MacBook Pro 2021 [Monterey 12.4] now when i hold down the e, i get a series of e’s repeated rather than the menu

On your MacBook tap the little Apple at the top left of the screen.

Tap System Preferences

Tap Keyboard, then once there, tap Keyboard and turn off Key Repeat

Then see if you get the options you were expecting when you hold the key down. There are other ways to get special characters. See this --> https://9to5mac.com/2021/12/02/how-to-do-special-characters-and-letter-accents-on-mac/

This can often be fixed by  opening Terminal and typing

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

return and then restart.
