2022 MBA M2 Set-Up Questions

Hello all,

I just received my new MBA M2 with 16Mb. RAM and 1Tb. SSD which is replacing my old mid-2012 MBA (a testament to the unbelievable longevity of Apple products). I would like to do a clean installation vs. a full migration to avoid transferring 10 years-worth of old unused files to the new computer. Is there a way to transfer just my iTunes, iPhotos and Books without transferring anything else? I have tried searching the internet, but can't find an exact answer to my specific question. Any help from you will be greatly appreciated and thank you!

As long as you are signed in with your same Apple ID on the new Mac, the iTunes and iBooks content will be available to directly download (or stream) on your new Mac. You will need to Authorize the new Mac as one of the 5 available authorizations (Music or TV app, Account menu > Authorizations > Authorize this Computer). If you use iCloud to sync your Photos, those will also download.

However, if you want to transfer them manually (e.g. with an external drive or flash drive), you will need to find them on your old computer.

Music/TV/Movies are in Music > iTunes > iTunes Media, Photos are in Pictures > iPhoto Library, etc. On your new Mac, items can be imported in their respective apps using File menu > Import. Note that for DRM-protected content (most media including books), you'll still need the new Mac to be Authorized using the same Apple ID originally used to purchase the content.

Depending on the MacOS version, you may have iPhotos and not the Photos app, in that case be aware that the import will take some time to complete (most of it is the processing step which includes face detection in all the photos, that can take a few days to complete but runs in the background).
