I have tried to add my child’s iCloud account to my phone so that I can turn on message forwarding in order to monitor their messages, but I keep getting the invalid account notice:

Text message forwarding is only designed to forward SMS texts from your iPhone to other devices that use your same Apple ID like your Mac or iPad. This wouldn't work the way you are intending to use it.
