Studio Display wakes to wrong screen size

Sometimes my Studio Display wakes showing the desktop photo at about half the screen size, in the lower left. Menubar and Dock are normal, but on a black background. After a second or so, the display returns to normal.

It's connected to a Mac Studio Ultra.

The desktop photo is in Photos, and is 4000 × 3000. It's set to Fill Screen in System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop.

Settings for the Studio Display are all stock:

Greetings Klahane,

To help troubleshoot the video issue, test after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the display. If possible, test with a different cable and port. Check out that suggestion here:

If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac - Apple Support

"Check your cable or adapter

Disconnect the cable from your external display from your Mac, then reconnect it. If the cable from your external display doesn't connect to the ports on your Mac, you can use a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter. If you're using a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter to connect a display, the adapter must be compliant with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt / USB 4."

Let us know how it goes.

Kind regards.

Hey there Klahane,

We agree this isn't expected behavior. While you may need to reach out to Apple Support regarding this, we first want to try ruling out some possible causes by confirming the following:

  1. When did this first start with the display, and have you tested another Mac with your display?
  2. If possible, what occurs when testing another display with your Mac to see if the same issue remains for the two seconds after waking it from sleep?
  3. The latest for your Mac would be macOS 12.5. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. This link will show how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.
  4. If you already have macOS 12.5 installed, we recommend a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Cheers!

"Check your cable or adapter"

The Studio Display is connected to a Mac Studio Thunderbolt 4 port. The cable is the one that came with the Studio Display, so brand new.

I've seen no other display anomalies.

Again, this has happened so few times, testing would be very difficult.

I was mainly wondering if a setting might affect this rare (for me) issue.

  1. This has only happened a few times, and only recently. But then I've only had the Mac Studio and Studio Display since late May.
  2. I have not tried the Studio Display with my M1 24" iMac, where it would have to be a second display.
  3. I have macOS 12.5.
  4. I have restarted many times since late May, and shut down and restarted a few times. Again, this has only happened a few times, certainly not on every restart or wake.
