Would like to change the actual font...not size...in the Messages app on MacBook Pro. Again...not size...Font.

First, Apologies. I didn't mean to sound sarcastic. Second, thanks for the screen shot, it helps. I have never seen that screen in Messages 14.0 or in Monterey so something seems to be amiss with your install.
Try booting into Safe Mode then restart normally. Then check.
I use Gifox and then use ImageOptim to reduce the file size for posting.
FWIW, I found the problem. You are on a Standard User account, not an Admin account. If you open System Preferences > Users & Groups, do you see an "Admin" account in the left column?

Sorry, I know how to change size. I want to change the actual font. Believe I'm using Heletica...several letters that are difficult to distinguish from other numbers/letters...Capital "I" & number "1". My right eye has vision issues & a different font would sure help.
You change the font from the "Textsize:" drop down menu.
Again, you change it in the same place. Choose "Other…" from the drop down menu and this window opens where you can choose any available font.
OK, which drop-down menu...Message Preferences. Cannot find "other" on any drop down menu. Limited only to size...not font choice option. Help?
No drop down font choice drop down from font size option... "Message 14.0". My MacBook Pro is up to date but possibly Message has a newer version. Will check it out. Thanks.
Clearly you are not doing what I described and showed you in the screen shots. Message 14.0 is the current version.
What a rude response..."clearly"? No "other" option. I followed your suggestions. Your sarcasm is not appreciated.
Just to add, you cannot change the font from a Standard account. There are several settings you can't change from a Standard account.
Reading about safe mode. Always try to solve issues before going to my IT son but will ask him to guide me through. This may be a fix for other quirks I’ve been experiencing. Thanks for your help.
