ipad4.1 not updating

my ipad4 battery has been dead for a long time do to not having a charge cord and the ios is stuck on

12.5.5 and i can't get it to update so my kid can use it for school can please help with this .

i can't afford to go bye a new one for his school use

If your iPad is stuck on iOS 12.5.5 and shows that it is up to date, then you have an iPad Air, first generation. You will not be able to update that device, and it is much too old to get the battery replaced. Apple does not replace the battery, they replace the entire device as out of warranty replacement. It would not be cost effective to pay for that. You can also look to see if you can find a refurbished iPad by Apple that would be more cost effective and would be one that would support a higher iOS. There is the link for the refurbished store.
