Unable to check for update

Trying to pair an Apple Watch series 3 watch with an IPhone 13 pro max.

watch connects and pairs, during that paring and setup process, Bluetooth menu show that my phone is connected to watch, then the app shows that it needs to check for update, and very soon it says “unable to check for update” and “due to not being connected to the internet”

please trust me, I have been on the internet all day searching for how to fix the watch or app or phone, not really sure which one has the hiccup. Does anyone have the fix. I have reset and restarted both phone and watch and and deleted and reinstalled the app twice, what else?
