User login freeze after Migration Assistant

I'm trying to transfer data from my old Mac (Intel, running Catalina) to an M1 MacMini running Monterey. I cloned the drive in the old Mac to an external hard drive, and then when I ran Migration Assistant and transferred the data to the M1, my user login screen froze after I entered the password. First, the rotating jewel was pink, and then turned black and continued rotating non-stop.


I know the data on the external drive is all right, because I cloned it onto another Intel Mac (the one I'm using now), and it works fine.


What is causing this problem? Also, what does it mean when the rotating jewel turns black? I really would like to start using the M1....

Hey there Daniel Gold3,


It sounds like you’ve done everything as you should. What happens if you boot your Mac up using safe mode? Can you log in without issues then? Test using the following steps:


  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

It sounds like you’ve done everything as you should. What happens if you boot your Mac up using safe mode? Can you log in without issues then? Test using the following steps:

Here's what's happened. At first, I ran Migration Assistant with a Time Machine backup of my old Mac. I used an external drive. Afterward, when I entered my user password on the M1, the rotating pink jewel appeared and then turned black. I waited and waited, for hours actually, but the computer refused to log in the user. The existing user account in the M1 was one that was created by the guy who sold me the computer. Essentially, it was an account with nothing in it and was created at setup, so that I could operate the machine. This account was OK. Next, thinking that the problem may be with Time Machine, I cloned the drive on the old Mac (using Carbon Copy Cloner) onto the external drive and started my old Mac up from that startup disk to verify that it was OK. When I ran Migration Assistant using this startup disk, the same thing happened: hanging after entering user password. By the way, I wiped the HD on the M1 and reinstalled Monterey each time, because otherwise I couldn't use the computer. Next, I again ran Migration Assistant with the startup disk and transferred everything but the User data. The computer booted up normally and logged in to the account I had created at setup. Finally, I ran Migration Assistant again and transferred the User data. The problem reoccurred; i.e., after entering the User password, the computer hung. The problem seems to be with the User data. I've eliminated all login items and switched to automated login, so no password is now required. I haven't tried transferring the data to the M1 yet, because frankly I'm tired of all this and want some solid information before I try again. Is there anything else you need to know? Any help you can give is much appreciated.

If the new computer is going to be the Apple Silicon M1 / M2 Equipped Computer - would suggest Only Migrating the User Account and nothing more.


Some have had success and others have been left with a mess when Migrating everything.


1 - Apple Silicon Monterey macOS 12 Only Support everything 64 bit and there is no workaround.


2 - Issues that may exist on the older computer will be migrated to the New Computer. This would badly pollute the new Original and Pristine installation of the new OS.


3 -  Applications, extensions and Software Drivers may or may not even work on the new computer.


4 - IMHO - it would be best to only install new application etc Directly from the Developer or the Apple Apps Store.


5 - Due Diligence on New Applications and make sure they are Monterey / Big Sur compatible and factor in the ARMs CPU of the Apple Silicon Computer  


6 - Picking up on good suggestion from @ Luis S above and agree on Staring Over with a Clean Installation and only Migrated the User Account.


7 - On an M1 Mac Mini one of the easiest ways is as per image below System Preferences >> " Erase All Content and Settings "

We have a few questions that will help us understand your issue better. In this case, did the data migration complete and you're unable to log into the user that you transferred to the M1 Mac? Do you have another user account on the M1 Mac that's working properly? How did you transfer the data to the M1 Mac? Did you use the external drive or directly from your older Mac? If you used the external drive, how did you clone the data? Did you use Time Machine or another service?

You should have started completely from fresh system and ONLY migrated the user accounts. You can still do that.


Make an installer o. A usb thumb drive; use it to erase the internal drive completely (the WHOLE DRIVE, not just the volumes in it); install the OS; when asked if you want to import, do so but check ONLY the user accounts.


Migrating old stuff from several versions ago and built for a totally different architecture is the primary cause of problems in new Apple Silicon macs.

Here's what's happened with this problem. I contacted Apple Support, and they very courteously spent an hour troubleshooting the problem. In the end, they had me copy the Home Folder from the old system and create a new account with it on the new system. Everything was transferred except passwords in Safari, which I can recover fairly easily.

However, I was curious about what you suggested, so I took an external hard drive and clean-installed Monterey on it. Then, using Migration Assistant, I migrated just the User account from the old system, which I had on another partition on the drive. When I tried to log in to the account, the same problem occurred. There must be some fundamental incompatibility between this account and Monterey.

Anyway, Apple solved the problem.
